Back High Seas: Ocean Tow Boats

Last Updated: April 7, 2024

Prelude: Carson Bates had been snatched up by the United States Navy as soon as he had graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in 1939. It was apparent that war was bearing down on the United States and Carson had graduated at the head of his class. He had a brand new Merchant Marine License and the Navy, in its infinite wisdom, decreed that he would spend the next several years as Navigator on Naval vessels. He was assigned to the Fleet Oiler USS Kiowa and hardly had time to say goodbye to his parents as he rushed to San Francisco to catch his ship. Despite the hardships and dangers of wartime service, Carson enjoyed his service on the huge tanker and he thrived. At the end of the war, he had advanced to Commander and he was the Captain of the USS Iroquois, a slightly smaller ship than the Kiowa. While serving out of Honolulu, he had married and he and his new wife, Susan, had a boy whom they named, Terry. Sadly, Susan sickened and died shortly after Terry's birth and Carson's Mother, Helen, stepped in and cared for the boy.
